Highlighting ...
Bridges, From Design to Destruction is grade 4 - 8 interdisciplinary program that builds math and literacy skills in a highly engaging, hands-on environment. Students first research various types of bridges around the world and in our local community. Working in small teams, students form construction companies with a $2 million dollar budget for purchasing supplies and constructing a model bridge.
Reinforcing geometry concepts and measurement, students develop scale model bridge plans. Building supplies are purchased, measured to scale, and milled to the correct angle and dimension. During the building process, students maintain a construction budget to mirror real-world construction projects. When the bridges are complete, they are tested for strength and structural integrity using a variety of weight systems. To date, our best bridge, built by a fifth grader, has held over 150 pounds!
